Spiritual Gifts

Spiritual gifts are supernatural empowerments given by the Holy Spirit to the followers of Christ so that they can do the work of building up the body of Christ, that is, the church, and extend the Kingdom of God throughout the world.

How Can I Discover My Spiritual Gifts?

There is no specific formula for discovering your spiritual gifts. But these three steps can be helpful:

1. Ask God

The Holy Spirit is the owner and dispenser of the spiritual gifts, so begin by asking Him to help you understand what spiritual gift(s) He's specifically given you.

At the same time, you should make sure you are familar with what God has already told you about spiritual gifts in the Bible. Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12, Ephesians 4, and 1 Peter 4 are good places to begin your study.

2. Ask Others

Often, our spiritual gifting is more obvious to other Christians than it is to us. Ask trusted Christian leaders what gifts they observe in you.

A quick way to jump-start this process is by taking a free "spiritual gifts inventory." Here's one we reccomend:

TAKE THE INVENTORY

Please register for the inventory (rather than taking it as a guest) and enter your pastor's email address at the end of the inventory so he receives a copy of your results.

3. Take A Test Drive

At this point, you should now have some idea about what your spiritual gift(s) might be. It is time to be bold and take a risk by exercising your gift. Of course, this requires a step of faith in obedience to God’s Word.

Tell a pastor what gift(s) you think you might have and that you'd like to take a "test drive" in using those gifts in the church. They'll be glad to help you!

Spiritual gifts are not innate, natural talents, like an ear for music or the ability to draw, but rather they are empowerments that the Holy Spirit gives to a believer to minister to the body in ways that were not possible by mere natural effort apart from the Holy Spirit. In the ministry of the apostles in the book of Acts, we see that they performed miracles, healed people, preached, and spoke in tongues, which they had not been able to do apart from Christ.

Spiritual gifts are empowerments for building up the church and extending the Kingdom of God. In 1 Corinthians 14, the Apostle Paul instructs this congregation on the function of spiritual gifts. He repeats several times that...
