Disciple Definition

What Is a Disciple?

Jesus told us to "go and make disciples..." (Matthew 28:19) But what exactly is a disciple anyway? We define a disciple as someone who is following Jesus, growing together, and reaching out.

Following Jesus

A disciple is someone who has a personal relationship with Jesus and is actively following Him. (Matthew 4:19)

Growing Together

A disciple is someone who grows alongside of others. Being a disciple is personal, but it is not private; it is lived out in the context of marriage, the family, the church, smaller groups, service to others, exercise of spiritual gifts, etc. (Acts 2, Hebrews 10:24-25)

Reaching Out

A disciple is someone who helps introduce people to Jesus who don't already follow Him. This requires building relationships with nonbelievers, sharing our faith story, and articulating the Gospel. (Acts 1:8)
